History Talk: The Spanish Legacy in the Southwest

As part of the Lessons from the Past, Looking Towards the Future lecture series in collaboration with UTEP, Dr. Ignacio Martinez, Assistant Professor of History at UTEP specializing in colonial Latin America and The Spanish Borderlands will speak about the settlement and colonization of the Southwest by Spain during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Focusing on the nuances and contradictions inherent in the military and religious efforts to colonize this area. As well as discuss some of the more recent debates surrounding the legacy of Spain in the Southwest.
